About the book
Slovenian tales of dragons, white chamois, golden birds and other mythological creatures (the collection: Zakladnica slovenskih pripovedi). Zlatorogovi čudežni vrtovi is the fifth title in the collection Zakladnica slovenskih pripovedi. “Our planet Earth with the Sun and the other stars, the moon and planets follows a predetermined path, it actually moves in some kind of an ordered cosmos. On this orbit, people imagined mythological persons as well as animals, their movements and actions. They depicted them in the form of dragons, multiple-headed snakes, giant fish, various unusual lizards, half-horses, white and black horses, unicorns, “zlatorogs”, birds, wolves, dogs and so on. Since people had to deal with certain natural phenomena and live in symbiosis with them in order to survive, they tried to approach this mysterious world of animals especially by means of various customs and habits as well as through poetry and storytelling, and thus find the right harmony. These animals that we still come across in folk tales and above all in myths and legends are the remnants of those old conceptions,” the authors wrote in their foreword. Didakta has been publishing the collection ZAKLADNICA SLOVENSKIH PRIPOVEDI for some years already. The collection’s editors are renowned Slovenian experts and researchers of the folk storytelling in Slovenia and beyond. In the four books published in the collection so far, Dr. Zmago Šmitek, Dr. Monika Kropej and Roberto Dapit, M.A., have gathered the most beautiful, interesting and typical examples of the folk tales which are in the safekeeping of the Institute of Slovenian Ethnology.
