About the book
Slovenian tales of witches, wizards and witch doctors are the seventh title in the collection Zakladnica slovenskih pripovedi. In this book we get acquainted with different Slovenian places, images and names. For example, in the folk imagination and everyday life, wizards were known as "čárnik", "črni štrigón", "strupenják" or "védavec" and witches were called "vešča", "vésna", "bojánca", "klékarca" or "švíla prerokvíla". Numerous Slovenian tales and stories are about the witches' and wizards' secret gatherings, their knowledge of hidden treasures and skills at putting spells on the weather. The source of customs, superstitions and tales about them reaches far back into the history of humankind. In her foreword, Dr. Monika Kropej explains the following about their great meaning: "Witchcraft or magic – from the Greek word mageía – was initially used by the oldest civilizations when people tried to influence nature, other people, animals and what was going on around them by means of rituals, conjuring, spells and other magical actions." The collection ZAKLADNICA SLOVENSKIH PRIPOVEDI is meant for anyone who is interested in the genuine storytelling of the Slovenian folk tradition. The selection of the tales is edited by the most respectable Slovenian experts. An individual thematic selection represents all the regions of the Slovenian ethnic territory including that abroad.
